I’ve been a professional model for over a decade, with experiences ranging from intensive photo workshops in Costa Rica to solo projects in NYC, and even coaching other models during their photo sessions. But it wasn’t an easy journey, especially at the beginning. Did I ever endure the awkward photo phase? Absolutely. I would have a vision in my mind, a concept I wanted to achieve—often with inspiration pictures. Despite my efforts, I was often turned away from jobs, lost in a sea of sameness, and never actually liked photos of myself. Posing was the toughest part. How many more times would I have to step in front of the camera and freeze?
The turning point for me came when I decided to go against the grain. I began experimenting with everything, expanding my versatility by truly understanding the essence of photo movement—which is much more than knowing where to place your hands, for instance. Though that foundational knowledge is important, there’s a deeper art to it.
Photo movement is visual storytelling, crafting a narrative through images, whether captured in the same photo session or through multiple. It’s about the cohesion between your poses and expressions, all based on a planned message or tone. The way you pose completely changes based on mood. For example, what if I showed you how to pose to convey seriousness and competence, then switch to fun and openness, all in the same session while seamlessly shifting between both of these? But for a more profound difference, we continue your story through a different photo session with a different direction, location, or props. This is the transition between photos to create a series that speaks volumes.
