Arti Verma didn’t originally know much about managing her finances, but she always wanted to learn how to be financially independent. “It’s very easy as a woman to lose yourself in the journey of raising kids or being in a family, and it’s very important that we educate ourselves financially and take control of our finances,” she says.

Today, Verma is an executive manager of one of the Edmonton branches of Punjab Insurance where she offers financial advice and life and health insurance services. She finds it rewarding, in no small part because she’s able to help so many men and women like her.

“When I first started, I realized there were a lot of people like me; I was not the only one. And it feels so good when you see smiles on others’ faces because of the knowledge you’ve (shared),” she says. Verma sees the trust and connection that she builds with her clients as crucial to her business and personal values. She wants to get to know them, their kids, their family environment, and their financials. She also stresses the importance of being selfless. “Easier said than done, but that’s one thing I really try to work on,” she says, mentioning that the focus should always be on how to help the client, in a mutually beneficial way.

To accomplish this, Verma sets annual meetings with clients to ensure they never feel left out—something she often sees lacking at larger financial institutions. “I’m going to be there in the picture, beginning to end.” And even if her clients are working with limited funds, she will help them create an estate plan that includes something for their loved ones.

Even as a kid and as the youngest sibling, Verma has always seen herself as a leader. “But it was only when I grew up, I realized I can’t help others until I learned myself,” she added. Her advice to those wanting to follow in her footsteps is to study—especially before offering advice to someone else. At the beginning of her career, she found products that worked extremely well for her and got excited, assuming everyone would need them. Over time she’s learned that everyone is different.

“I realize not everyone’s Arti and not everyone’s in the same boat,” she says. “And that’s when I started learning, learning, and learning—every day I’m learning as if I just started my career today.”
