From Model to Entrepreneur: Defining Worth
Walking the runway, heels clicking on polished floors, lights flashing all around me, I felt alive, beautiful, and fierce. While I loved modeling, it is an industry that puts expiry dates on young women, so how could I continue feeling this empowered? Before my self-worth could be defined by judges and men in suits, I left the modeling world behind.
I was determined to find something where only I could define my worth. Barely a young adult, I needed every ounce of courage to leave my country and build a new story in Canada. It was incredibly challenging, especially without my friends and family around. I couldn’t speak the language and our cultures were vastly different. I heavily leaned on any support I could get, barely scraping by as I rotated between three part-time jobs.
Despite these challenges, I knew that if I wanted to be successful, I had to finish my education. A degree in Marketing felt like the best fit.
Soon after graduating, I started an import and export business that would later be known as Soak Luxury Bath Products. I brought in steam showers and unique bath products that had never been sold in Canada. Soak opened many doors and helped me gain a deep understanding of the housing and renovation industry as a result.
I felt accomplished, but after years of running Soak, I wanted to venture into something new, but not radically different. With my experience in housing and renovation, I settled on real estate.
This career has brought me fulfillment, while still allowing me to dress fashionably, be resourceful, and have independence. I’ve combined my housing expertise and multilingual abilities to assist underrepresented clients, like Chinese immigrants, in finding a home. Just like when I first immigrated here and needed every support I could get, I am now that person for other families trying to navigate a new life.
I overcame many hurdles to get here, but I did it. I am Diana Wong, a model turned entrepreneur. I am still alive, beautiful, and fierce, but on my terms, with no expiry date. Don’t let anyone define you, except you.
