I originally started my business because I realized how much I missed working with books. Since then, I have decided to partner up with a good friend of mine and become part of the BMP Accounting & Tax Inc. team to provide a more diversified portfolio of services.
In its infancy, I marketed our business through participation in networking groups to foster relationships within the business community. Soon, raves on social media and word of mouth became the core of our advertising technique. Relying on these two marketing strategies, BMP Accounting & Tax has grown over 40% just in the last year.
As a budding small business owner, fear and doubt are constant companions, but it is important to believe in yourself and what you have to offer. Surrounding yourself with folks that support your vision and encourage you when the going gets tough is key. After all, nobody can offer services quite like you do.
When hiring, we look for hardworking folks who genuinely care about people, because our business philosophy is to offer excellent and professional accounting services with a small-town feel. It’s an accounting practice where everyone knows your name. We build relationships while offering the full scale of quality accounting services, and this begins with people who care about people.
One thing we would never compromise in our business is following CRA guidelines. There is a common thread among folks who live a quiet and happy life—they avoid crisis by playing by the rules.
If you’re looking to start your own business, I would say to first take some time to reflect and journal about what you do when you forget how much time has passed. Don’t worry about how silly your favorite pastimes might be. When you feel like your list is complete, you’ll be able to identify how to align your business with your passions. And remember to hire out anything that distracts you from what you do best.
