INSTINCTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Trust Your Gut for Success

Imagine a woman waiting for an elevator. When the doors open to reveal a man inside, she feels a sudden wave of apprehension. Despite not usually being fearful, she considers recent news of neighborhood attacks and the time of day, and her instincts send a warning. She debates with herself, ultimately choosing to ignore her instinct and step into the elevator.

This scenario highlights how we often suppress our instincts, prioritizing social politeness over personal safety. Common self-doubt phrases such as “Maybe I’m just overthinking it” or “I don’t want to seem negative” exemplify how we talk ourselves out of trusting our inner voice.

The importance of listening to our instincts extends beyond safety; it also applies to seizing opportunities. How many times have you felt an inner nudge to explore something new but dismissed it as frivolous or a waste of time/money? These nudges, whether they lead to a new connection with someone or a potential business opportunity, are worth paying attention to.

For example, I was curious about an online event where a friend was speaking. Following the event, the host invited me to a local networking lunch. Initially, I hesitated, feeling like an imposter and doubting my place among successful businesswomen, but I trusted my curiosity and my instincts and attended. This decision led to meeting Dorothy Briggs, whose enthusiasm and integrity were instantly recognizable. Dorothy’s invitation to take over her Divorce Magazine has changed my life, opening doors to new opportunities and connections.

The lesson here is clear: trust your instincts. Those first impressions and gut feelings are powerful. Research supports this, showing that our initial reactions are often the most accurate. Acting on these instincts can lead to incredible opportunities, as it did for me.

In business, trusting your gut can be the difference between missed opportunities and remarkable success. When you feel that inner nudge, get curious and explore it. Whether it leads to a lesson or a breakthrough, you’ll build your instinct muscle, making you more attuned to recognizing and seizing the opportunities that come your way.
