Depending on your personality, you may find being self-employed exciting or terrifying. Realistically, it is probably a blend of both emotions, with many more added in. There are myriad reasons people start their own businesses, and none of them are more “right” than any other. For me, it was the ability to work with clients who shared the same outlook, values, and goals as myself. This allows me to do what I love and help those who love what they do.
One of my key takeaways from the workforce was that having the ability to choose clients, industries, and balance in life were strong values of mine. For this reason, I meet with potential clients to allow us both to ask questions and determine whether we are a good fit. Your accountant is someone you need to know has your back. Getting timely answers in understandable terminology is key to providing you with valuable help. What I strive to provide my clients with are tailored solutions that they understand, in a cost-effective and timely way.
This allows business owners to make informed decisions about their business both now and into the future. From my perspective, it also means that I don’t take on more clients than I have time for; being overcommitted does not fit my values of balance and providing timely responses.
Goals need to be fluid depending on individual factors, and tax strategies may need to be adjusted accordingly. Planning is not a “one and done” process, but rather a long-term journey with check-ins along the way to ensure we stay on track.
I am strongly committed to owner-managed businesses, and my clients include new corporations, those growing, and those enjoying longevity. I have had clients start businesses from scratch, buy businesses, sell businesses, or wind them down. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for every situation.
